PXS EXCLUSIVE: Interview With Rising Toronto Artist MVC
Updated: Dec 25, 2020
1) Tell us about yourself.
I’m Omari Kelly born on January 24th. I’m from Toronto, a small complex area named “Villaways” located at Leslie and Shephard In North York, Ontario.
2) Name some of your passions. Who are some of your biggest influences?
I am currently an independent rap artist and my biggest influences, overall, are Jamie Fox and Will Smith. I grew up listening and watching them and really respected the fact they are multitalented artists.
3) What are some of your biggest accomplishments thus far, in your life?
My biggest accomplishment thus far, I’d say was hitting 100K plays on my latest mixtape project titled Time Changes Everything, which dropped August 4, 2020 — also releasing solo music videos and doing big numbers on them as well.
4) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself in the studio working as usual also working with some of the biggest names in the world and hopefully signed to a major label. I have no problems with being independent though. I would also like to be pursuing a career in America.
5) What legacy do you want to leave behind?
When it’s my time to go I want my name to be out there with the greats and everyone to remember me for my music and the genuine person I am. I want my kids to never have to go through what I did to get to where I am. I believe in generational wealth.
6) Name one artist you dream of working with, dead or alive — go!
There are a few artists I would like to work with so I’ll give you my top 5.
Drake - who wouldn’t wanna work with the goat in the music industry especially one that comes from your hometown.
Lil Durk - I super rock with Durk, been rocking with him since he first came out and I agree with him when he says he’s the voice of the streets he keeps it real and tells you how it really is in these streets.
Meek Mill - been a fan of Meek before he was signed. I felt he’s been and respected him for his grind and hustle to make it and now he’s even more real for tryna put others on.
Lil Baby - he has the game right now and I fuck with how he moves and conducts himself he, hasn’t missed yet.
K Koke - I’ve been listening to K Koke since I was young and because of social media we’ve been able to communicate and thru DMS and he’s a genuine guy and keeps it 100. I got a little buzz in the UK and I feel like that would certify me even more out there to have a track with one of the OGs of the UK rap scene.
7) When did you decide to pursue music seriously?
I started rapping after hearing and going to the studio with Sam.G (a well know Toronto rapper) in 2012...He then created a rap group formerly known as HS LTF and we started making a lot of tracks with other members in the group and I haven’t stopped since!
8) Are you currently working on any projects?
I just dropped my first mixtape on August 4th; I kinda like the response I’ve been getting off it so I do have a few tracks in the vault that I plan on putting together and making a project that I would like to drop on my birthday Jan. 24th, but the date hasn’t been confirmed.
9) What is your writing process like?
I usually find a beat and will rest the first 4-6 bars and get to distracted by other things and leave it ... I’ll end up going to the studio and putting the beat on and putting the first 4-6 bars on the track and freestyle the rest.
10) What can we expect from you in 2021? Are you planning on pursuing anything other than music?
In 2021 I plan to drop a lot more music, a lot more music videos and I would like to learn to record myself so I could bring my love for music to my home. I wanna help up and coming artists get more out there — I’m big on unity.
